One of Japan’s most beautiful UNSECO World Heritage sites, Nikko is dotted with stunning temples, shrines and amazing buildings, as well as an abundance of nature and Kegon waterfalls, one of the most beautiful in all of Japan.
Nikko was originally conceived by Lord Tokugawa to drain the resources of other lords in Shogun-era Japan. He felt that creating an opulent palace and surrounding temples and shrines, funded by other daimyo (lords) would prevent them from scheming and trying to wrest the Shogunate from him. Well, it worked. Japan didn’t have another civil war for over 250 years, until after the Americans came and demanded that Japan open up to the West and allow trade and contact with the outside world.
