Gustavia - Guadeloupe, Guadeloupe The island was discovered by Columbus in 1493, but Spaniards did not inhabit it (they preferred to hold the Great Antilles). Buccaneers and other pests from England, Holland and France occupied the island in different times, until Louis XVI sold it to Sweden for a warehouse in Goteborg Harbour, and given the name of Gustavia in honour of the King of Sweden. In the XIX century they sold it back to France.
