Antananarivo, affectionately referred by the locals as Tana, is the capital of Madagascar. It is a large city with plenty to do and see. Its position in the mountains makes its location very attractive, and a few hills in the city offer great views. The most prominent sight of the city is the former royal palace Rova, which burnt down at the end of the 20th century and effort is being spent to rebuild it. There are other palaces to see, as well. Many parks and narrow steep alleys across the capital give it a local feel, despite is overall size. Antananarivo has a few very good hotels, including the Hilton, which are priced reasonably compared to the counterparts elsewhere in the world. But plentiful budget options are also good. Restaurants and bars are in good numbers and their quality is superb - they could be anywhere in the world and be very popular. Tana is well connected with main cities of the country by air (Air Madagascar - excellent safety record) and by minibus. [edit text][editors]
