Ilakaka is a small township near Ranohira, the entry point to the National Park of L'Isalo. Ilakaka has grown to due to the mineral deposits of sapphire. The place is basically built along the main road linking Fianarantsoa with Toliara. The buildings are simple wooden shacks covered with reed and palmtree leaves. Every second building has a name "... Sapphire" or 'Saphire ..." where '...' is a name like Adam, Eve, Joseph, etc or just a random word. There is nothing to do in Ilakaka and the place can be a little rough. It is dominated by the Asians, mainly from Sri Lanka, China and Lebanon. If one knows their stones, it might be a good place to stock up on some jewels relatively cheaply. [edit text][editors]
