Toamasina (Tamatave) is an important harbour of eastern Madagascar, if not the most important one. It has been a trading port for a long time, and the city has gained practices and reputation of a port city - prostitues and petty crime. It is however still relatively safe and walking at night is fine, provided no business is attempted with the working girls. Toamasina once was a very beautiful city with grand mansions and palaces from the colonial era. Wide avenues planted with majestic, tall palm trees, are still the evidence of grand Toamasina once was. After frequent devastating cyclones, many buildings have been badly damaged. Yet, the town is still charming and the there are plenty of activities around. The beach is also fine. Toamasina is one of Madagascar's cities famous for its pousse-pousse chariots (rikshaws) pulled by men. They are colourful and fun to ride. [edit text][editors]
