Isalo National Park is one of the most prominent parks on Madagascar. It is often referred as a Jurassic Park, as the majority of the rock and fossils come from the Jurassic period. The colourful rocks, canyons, gorges are quickly compared with the rocks of Colorado. Isalo is a good place to spot lemurs, the ringtail and the white sifaka are amongst the easiest to spot. But one has to set off early in the morning. Trekking in the parks is really rewarding. It can get really hot on the flat mountains, but there are also many natural swimming pools with delightfully cold water.
Ranohira, along the main road, is the gateway to the park and this is where one buys a ticket and hires a guide. It has a couple of good value hotels, and really good one, but a little expensive, embedded in the nearby mountains (it accepts credit cards), and several campsites. The 2001 saw construction of many accommodation options for the total eclipse. [edit text][editors]
