Toliara (or in French - Tulear) is a relatively large town just north of the Tropic of Capricorn. It has fine examples of colonial architecture and wide seafront avenues lined up with majestic palm trees. It has a nice square with pavement cafes and places to eat, have a drink and write postcards. It is famous of the pousse-pousse man-pulled rickshaws, which are the largest in Madagascar (there are other cities that have them: e.g. Toamasina and Antsirabe, but theirs are smaller). Toliara is a good place for organising provisions and excursions along the coast, both north and south of the Tropic. The number of good hotels (good value) is sufficient and some of the restaurants are absolutely fantastic, particularly for seafood. The area around Toliara is good for sun soaking and exploring the drier version of Madagascar. [edit text][editors]
