Africa - Tunisia, Mahdia To discover the real desert of Tunisia you have to go into the southernmost region of the country and stay in the splendid resort of Douz, known as "the door of the desert". Douz is the oldest oasis in Tunisia: it stands close to the Sahara desert, among white sand dunes and authentic date palm forests that over the centuries have made the economy of this location flourishing. Furthermore, Douz has always been a fundamental stop for the caravans that headed from the southern Saharan to the Tunisian coasts. The nomadic culture of the M’razig is still present in this location, a people of nomadic shepherds who have always preferred to live in the authenticity of desert life. Very well known is the Souq of Douz, the city market, where spices and handicrafts are sold which color and perfume the whole city; weekly the cattle market is organized where the shepherds rush in early to win the best donkeys and dromedaries.
