Three lines
Mopti is an important town in Mali based at the banks of the Niger River. Its population now exceeds 100 thousand. The town has several faces. One is the old town where households are built in a traditional Sub-Saharan way and where the old mud-brick mosque is based. The other is the modern 'metropolis' district overflowing with concrete and chaotic structures housing offices, shopping centres and multifamily accommodation. Yet another is the district of villas, built almost in the Mediterranean style, not far from the Niger River, where obviously rich people live. Then, the central harbour, where one can get transportation to Timbuktu (in season), is again different. It is colourful, busy and offers surprisingly interesting eateries and bars overlooking the river. And yet, there are patches of swamps and fishing areas inside the city limits, where frogs go crazy... [edit text]  [editors]
