Douglas is the capital of the Isle of Man, which is not part of the United Kingdom, although Queen Elizabeth II is the Lord of Man. Douglas is also where most visitors arrive on the island.
To any lover of different forms of transport, Douglas is like a foretaste of Paradise. Either the transport is based there, like the steam railway to the south, the electric railway [old and reminiscent of Lancashire and Yorkshire on holiday], the Island's bus service and the horse trams - or it's easily accessible by the electric railway; e.g. the mountain railway up Snaefell from Laxey [qv] and the Groudle Glen line with a 2ft gauge. Take the trouble to examine 'explorer tickets'. They are likely to save you a lot of money.
Whereas Douglas is well stocked with hotels you may prefer the rural charms of one of the smaller places. [edit text][editors]
