Laxey is in the Isle of Man, which is not part of the United Kingdom although Queen Elizabeth the Second is the Lord of Man.
Most people reach the Island in Douglas, the capital and major port. The best way to Laxey then is by the electric train. This is surprisingly reminiscent of times when much of Lancashire and Yorkshire's population would appear on holiday during their town's Wakes Weeks.
There are two major incentives for getting off at Laxey, even if the simple attraction of a lovely place is not enough for you. First there is what claims to be the world's largest water wheel, near the station and functioning for display after Easter.
Then there is the terminus of the mountain railway to the Island's highest point, Snaefell.
If you have completed these attractions, the area outside the station is a perfect place to enjoy some of the Island's delightful and pure beer. Also you should continue on the electric train to Ramsey, stopping off for some of the beaches. [edit text][editors]
