Travel guide to Bonampak

Mayan Remains of Queen's Palace

A prize to archaeologists, Bonampak is famed for its three rooms of murals. Until recently, trekking to the site required a 10km hike through the rain forest. The Lakandon Mayan tribe have now installed a private road way and operates the only bus traveling the route.

The murals have provided a key to understanding Mayan culture and ritual. Room 1 depicts the presentation of a child, thought to be the future king. Room 2 enacts a battle with its many preparations. Room 3 celebrates the victory of Bonampak over an attempted coupe. The murals were discovered in 1946 but have been damaged greatly by air and environment. They are scheduled to be closed off to the public in 2009. The original photos show vibrant colour and detail, must of which has faded. The murals are still amazing in their form and sense of movement. Most moving are the captives in Room 3, undergoing sacrifice and decapitation. several nice stelae and small temples finish the site.
