Yaxchilan sits on an elbow of the Usumacinta river, at the border of Guatemala and Mexico. Accessible only by traveling an hour up river in a long boat, the ruins are entered up a path through dense rainforest. The doorway to Xibalba, the 9 layered underworld, awaits at the top of the entry stairs, daring you to enter through a labyrinth of unlit halls (bring a headlamp) filled with bats and tarantula spiders. On the other side, a beautiful courtyard awaits. Long famed for it's doorway lintels, Yaxchilan is a wonder of Mayan artwork. Detailed hieroglyphics tells stories of far away Tikal and Palenque. A hill top temple to Lord Shield Jaguar (Structure 23) contains stunning carved lintels depicting ritual blood lettings and a frieze below the entrance which details a Mayan ball game. Unique to the Mayan world, this site is largely erected by Queens and has many monuments dedicated to women. The remote, riverside setting gives Yaxchilan an Indiana Jones feel that enriches the experience. [edit text]  [editors]
