Guanajuato is a eautiful colonial city in the North Central part of Mexico. The city was built in a valley and has risen on the sides of three mountains. This was once the location of the richest silver deposits known, but the silver and other minerals have generally been extracted from the area.
Life in this town of 113,000+ residents is teeming. Tourist flock to the city for the silver souvenirs. Others enjoy the nightlife. During the Spring, the Festival Cervantino pays homage to the author of Don Quixote. The university sponsors a group of medieval troubadors who sing their way through the town on the weekends.
A famous hero of the Revolution, Pipila, came from Guanajuato. A statue to his honor sits atop one of the mountains. Numerous museums exist, including one dedicated to the mummies from the city. This city abounds with famous local legends and is a highlight of any visit to the area. [edit text][editors]
