Known as "Lorenzo Marques" during the Portuguese colonial times, Maputo is now the modern African capital city of Mozambique, one of the poorest countries in the modern world.
After decades of civil war Mozambique is again open for tourism. It is slowly regaining the confidence of travellers.
Maputo is surprisingly western, with wide straight streets, lined with trees.
"Praca de Independencia", with its brillantly white facade, overlooks the main square. The centre now shows a statue Samora Machel, the country's first president.
Great day trips include a visit to Inhaca Island and the white beaches and lagoons north of the city.
