Ilha de Mocambique is the place from which the entire country took its name. It is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is one of the most striking places to see in Mozambique. This small island is divided into the 'stone town' and the rest. The stone town boasts forts, churches and chapels (the oldest European building on the souther hemisphere is there), mansions, parks, museums, colonial hospital, colonial port authority, large mosques and little pretty villas. All complemented by little cafes, clubs and restaurants. The rest contrasts dramatically with reed-roofed houses and simple households. The people on the island are amongst the friendliest in the world. One could stay in this place for months and months. [edit text][editors]
