It is said that Diego Cao (Portuguese) was the first European to come here, he erected a stone cross which some say was stollen and taken to Germany - a replicate now stands here.
However the main attraction of Cape Cross are the seals as there is probably not much else along the Skeleton Coast. The area provides a perfect feeding ground and from October (the breeding season), the beach and surrounding rocks sees some 250,000 Cape Fur Seals come ashore. It is survival of the fittest here and the weak ones provide food for the jackals that parole the shoress.
Whilst ithe seal colony provides a great photo opportunity the noise and the smell makes for a quick exit. [edit text][editors]
