Known as the Matterhorn of Namibia, Spitzkoppe is the most well know mountain in the country. Formed from a collapsed volcanoe, it’s characteristic granite massif formation stands 1800 metres high. It is found in an endless dry plain between Usakos and Swakopmund, where the only change in landscape is the mountain range like monoliths in middle of nowhere.
The area is however beautiful in a very wilderness way with interesting flora speckled around. Didn’t see much wildlife around apart from a few rock dassies (which are noted to be Africa’s closest living relation to an elephant), plus a few birds.
Climbing the mountain is fun, however they recommend that you have equipment as it can be a little dangerous. A special bonus is that there are Bushmen cave paintings that are hundred of years old.
Entrance to the park is about N$20 – that’s equivalent to around £1.20 and if camping there (N$20 pp) be prepared to have no facilities, no toilets, no showers, no water etc. [edit text][editors]
