Delta del Orinoco is a vast labyrinth of islands, channels and mangrove swamps. The Delta del Orinoco is inhabited by the Warao (or Guarao) Indians, who have lived here from time immemorial. Today numbering about 25,000, they are Venezuela`īs largest indigenous group after Guajiro of Zulia. Two-thirds of the Waraos live in the eastern part of delta, between the Cano Mariusa and the Rio Grande, where they are distributed across about 250 tiny communities. They are excellent boat builders, making their dugout canoes from logs of large trees, using fire and simple axes. They use native language, officially classified as indepenent - because it does`ńt belong to any of their major linguistic families. The Waraos are skillful craftspeople, especially carved figures from balsa wood. [edit text][editors]
