Amersfoort is a medieval city right in the centre of the Netherlands.
The city originated as a ford, a shallow place to cross the river Eem. This river enters the city at Monnikendam Gate and leaves it at Koppelpoort, which is a land-and-water gate. The gates are still there in all their glory.
Mondriaanhuis is the house where Piet Mondriaan was born in 1872. and now a museum (Thursday - Sunday 2 pm - 5 pm)
Amersfoort is a very good place to escape the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam. It only takes 30 minutes by direct train. There are trains every 15 minutes. They leave from Amsterdam Central Station from platform 8b. Return trip is 11.30 euros. [edit text][editors]
