Located on the western coast, in the mouth of Grey River, on the South Island is Greymouth. From here the Transalpine trains can be taken across the Canterbury plains, to or from Christchurch.
Not really a pretty town, but it is the largest on the west coast. There are many shops where you can purchase, at reasonable prices, jade. It is also possible just to walk along the coast and find jade (or so I was told).
The things to do and see in the area are: visit the Punakaiki, Pancake Rocks or Shantytown to pan for gold; see the glow worms or go caving, quad-biking or white water rafting. [edit text][editors]
