Nelson, the main city in the top of the South Island, and, by decree of Queen Victoria, New Zealand's first city, is known for its sunshine, arts scene, outdoor recreation and wine and as a base for the Abel Tasman, Nelson Lakes and Kahurangi National Parks. The small but friendly city is dominated by the Cathedral at the end of Trafalgar Street. Tahuna Beach, 3km from the city, is the best known of several excellent swimming beaches. There are numerous backpackers' hostels, camping grounds, motels and guesthouses in or near the city. The nightlife has greatly improved within the last ten years, complementing the excellent lifestyle enjoyed by local families and visitors alike. On weekend mornings there is an excellent arts and crafts market located in the Buxton Car Park off the main street. The region enjoys perhaps New Zealand's best climate with mild temperatures and numerous sunshine. Care should be taken to cover up during the middle of the day to prevent skin cancer.
