Bergen travel tips

Fantoft Stavkirke. [Stave Church]
It might seem odd to call a stave church a secret place but it would be only too easy to miss. When the driver of the bus forgot to tell me, I had no idea we'd passed it! This could be called a new old church because the oruginal was burnt down and rebuilt in the 1980s. more

Gamle Bergen Museum
Gamle simply means old and this is a collection of about 40 wooden houses and a church just a short bus ride from the city. They were rescued from oblivion, mainly in Bergen. You can only go in to these buildings during a guided tour, which can be strongly recommended. more

Hurtigruten [Norwegian Coasal Voyage]
This is described by the proprietors as 'The World's most beautiful voyage.' I wouldn't know about that and they might not either but it's pretty special. If you like a cruise with entertainment and 'Captain's Table' you could well hate this but if you fancy a working boat with marvellous scenery and great meals this is for you. More on my travel report under Kirkenes For the postal address relevant for you, check who are the agents in your own country. more

Steens Hotel
Given the price level in Norway, this possibly could even be called budget. It's a really pleasing 1890s building and the website given doesn't mention the breakfast room [breakfast included in the price] which provides a cheering start for the day. Stream and park opposite. Near the centre but there is a STEEP [though short] pull up on the way. more
