Flåm is one of the most visited villages in Norway, being at the heart of the 'Norway in a Nutshell' route. The Flåmsbahn, a railway that runs from sea level here to Myrdal on the Oslo-Bergen line, is deservedly famous, both for its magical scenery and for its mechanical prowess. Each coach is equipped with five separate brakes, each of which is capable of stopping the whole train.
On the water you can take the car ferry on the Nutshelf section to Gudvangen, enjoying the almost unbelievable Naerøy Fjord, or you can take an evening trip to the far side of the Sognefjord or there are fast boats all the way to Bergen. You might not be well advised to ride to Aurland, expecting to pick up the Gudvangen boat there, because if the number of passengers has reached the limit, the boat doesn't even put in!
You don't need to be a hardened walker to enjoy a walk here; you can even use the Flåmsbahn for the uphill if you want! [edit text][editors]
