Tromso is often described as the capital of Northern Norway and it's certainly the most northerly city. The name of its cathedral as the 'Ice Cathedral' could mislead people into thinking it's made of ice - like a well-known hotel. It isn't but it's a very modern and interesting building.
For anybody, but particularly for passengers on the Coastal Voyage who don't get much chance to get high up, Tromso's funicular is a real treat, providing a glorious view over the city and numerous islands. This is possible as a 'shore trip' from the boat on its southern jorney, when it reaches Tromso at about midnight, but it's much cheaper to get a local bus and go on your own on the northbound voyage. This means you miss going into the Ice Cathedral, which is included in the northward trip on the way up but you can compensate for this by visiting the proud modern church at Hammerfest. [a town!]
The scenery north of Norway, across to the Lyngen Alps, is some of the best of the whole voyage. [edit text][editors]
