How many Countries and Dependancies?

We all start with how many continents we have visited! The next list is the UN list, we all agree currently 192 countries. There are some extra independent or disputed non-members: Antarctica, Holy See (Vatican), Taiwan, Kosovo and West Sahara). The Olympic games hosts 203 countries including Puerto Rico, Bermuda, Hong Kong and other non-UN members. I like the official list that Jorge uses: 238 countries and dependancies of ISO 3166-2 (International Standard Organization, of Geneva). I consider the UK, USA, Russia, India, Australia and other federations as groups of nations and united countries. Siberia is different to Moscow, Alaska & Hawaii not New York, Scotland and Northern Ireland different to England and Wales. Bavaria and Catalania have their own local governments too. All those states should be counted seperately? Zululand and the Transkei: two very different folk! Does any member have a proper list of the ~600 true regions of the world? Guinness made a list some years ago consisting on 265 countries, of which 14 territories are not listed in the other lists and therefore are considered the “14 secret Guinness territories”, some of them very hard to reach, such as Paracel Island or Bouvet (although Wojciech Dabrowski managed to get to Bouvet 2 years ago!). The Californian based Travelers’ Century Club considers 317 countries and territories, and some others clubs (MTP and SISO) increase the territories to 673 and 3978 respectively (the countries and territories computed by these 3 clubs are easy to find in Internet writing their names in Google). Wojciech and, at a lower level, Krys (he is younger), are the most enthusiastic Globo members who try to visit all the countries and territories of the world with amazing success. I both wish them success! Whilst Russian or German Federations or even the Kingdom of Spain would be easy to split into regions for historical or cultural reasons, how about India and the whole of Africa where ethnic, cultural, linguistic diversities are phenomenal? Surely India, Brazil, Mexico, USA, Canada are already divided into states, but the division of Africa was a violation on ethnography.... No need to list common countries here! Perhaps in 10 years the official UN and ISO lists will look different? :-) Jorge, I like the list of your suggested club www.travelerscenturyclub.org but they do not split the USA, Russia Federation, neither India and other big countries.
