I'm seeking the advice of my fellow travelers on the opening of a Travelers Cafe. YOUR input is greatly appreciated.
The cafe will feature
-Guide books (about 6 different companies Not just LP)
-Maps (different versions)
-Scrapbook Items related to only Travel
-Travel Magazines
-International Newspapers
-Fair Trade Coffee and Tea
-Imported Beers (depending on the liquor license)
-International Cookbooks
The Cafe will feature a different country every 2 weeks or so and try to promote travel to these countries when there are major festivals/Events going on.
-Live Local 'world' music, once a week--the musician will be able to sell his own product
The general "Atmosphere" will be laid back in nature. You can walk into the Cafe and instead of music from the radio, you hear music from all over the world. You can grab a coffee or a beer, a pastry from whatever country and sit back on a sofa/couch or at a table and listen to the music, read an International newspaper.
Or, if your planning a trip, you can go to the planning section get a table and peruse the books, maps etc. watch videos etc..
There may be guest speakers giving lectures of their trips or there may be general discussions on others trips.
I hope to have a bargaining section where a person from a different country can toot their wares.. but the method of sale will be barter only... to teach other non-travel savvy people how it's done.
In the future there will be a kiosk where one can buy their tickets and get going on their trip.
There may also be a chance for local musicians to "jam" at the cafe.. As long as it's cultural based.. ie: Drumming, Highland dancing etc.. no Rock bands..
Everything will be based on the budget traveler.. This cafe will not promote 1st class travel unless it can be done on the cheap.
The cafe will also promote environmental travel and will sell only green products.
Do you have a favorite Magazine? Book, Item etc. Often when I travel I see other travelers with items not common to North America and I would like to promote them.
I plan to decorate it with Items that I brought from my travels and have a hammock somewhere in the cafe. Anything can be bought in the Cafe but it must be bartered for..
I'm also looking into the labor laws to see if it is possible to pay a person in "trips" rather than cash. How cool is that!!
This Cafe will only feature "authentic" items.
So, to my Fellow travelers. What would YOU as a traveler like to see in the Cafe? I know what I like but what about you? This is YOUR place.
I look forward to hearing from you all....
Tashi

You have very well described a good normal worldwide "Internet Cafe". Or, would this be a different kind of only "Americans" real cafe in Winnipeg or a "virtual" cafe? I dream of having a real place open to all and incorporating every cultural on earth, inviting ALL travellers. Perhaps we should get together?
the cafe is real. not virtual.. yes it will be in Winnipeg..and yes it is open to all who have a desire to learn about another culture. I have yet to see a "normal internet cafe" like the one I propose, which is why I'm asking for ideas. I have never been to a cafe that is geared ONLY to travelers, or people who want to learn about different cultures. In essence, the cafe is to "educate" people that there is more out there than what they see around them.
Canada and the USA are made up of different cultures, but surprisingly many people are ignorant of them. In Europe, Asia etc I would think it would be different because of the close proximity of the countries.. ie: moroc, Tunis and Turkey are heavy tourist areas visited by mostly Europeans. I want to reach out and teach the people and let them experience the world via music, photos, people etc..
like I said, if you have any input to add as to WHAT should be in the Cafe, or what you would like to see let me know. 100 worldly brains are better than one!!

What an excellent place to spend time. If ever I get to Winnipeg I would come and visit. One item I'd like to see is national newspaper. You mentioned international ones, but these are not very interesting as it nice to read what happend in the city /town/ region where i am staying
