Travel guide to Baltit Fort

700 years old Baltit Fort is situated in Hunza, Northern Areas, Pakistan, high above Karimabad, facing the Rakaposhi Peak. In old times the rivalry of the Hunza and Nagar states, small independent states, on opposite sides of the Hunza River, resulted in Baltit as the capital seat of the Hunza. In the early 15th fifteenth century the Mir of Hunza married a princess from Baltistan (Little Tibet), whose changes of Baltit Fort were influenced by Tibetan architecture. The Northern Areas lost most of its built heritage around the 19th century as a result of the wars with Kashmir. In December 1891 the British demolished the watch towers of the Baltit Fort, which was officially inhabited until 1945. Handed to the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in 1989 and renovated as is the village with its small, new enterprises, it is now maintained as a museum and cultural centre by the Baltit Heritage Trust. Access to the Fort is limited to pedestrians and only 25 visitors are allowed at any one time. [edit text] [editors]
