The 'flame tree'
Andahuaylillas is bypassed by the road from Puno to Cusco and it is far from obvious that a real treasure is being missed as you go past. However it's well worth bumping over a dirt road for a short distance to reach its main square.
Here you will find a fairly simple looking church from the outside, built early after the Spanish conquest on the base of an Inca temple. This was one of the first attempts in the area to impress and convert the pre-Spanish inhabitants and the sheer quantity of precious metals is stupendous.
This is complemented by the lovely frescoes which practically cover the walls. [edit text]  [editors]
