The Spanish named the town ‘Cuzco’ probably as a mark of disrespect as it means small dog or hypocrite, they didn’t want to recognize it as the capital of the Incas Empire. The official name is Qosqo City and has a population of around 300k. The town is 3,400 meters above sea level and any visitor arriving feels the affects of the altitude. The temperature averages 11 degrees which translates to cold evenings and early mornings but when the sun comes up the days are quite warm.
The main square is Plaza de Armas and there are many shops, restaurants, pubs and bars there; there is also the Cathedral, El triunfo and the church of Jesus Maria to explore. The streets are filled with culture and some of the buildings are quite fascinating. [edit text][editors]
