The Ballestas Islands are found in the Pacific ocean off the coast of Peru, some way south of Lima. They are sometimes known as the 'poor man's Gallapagos' but surely few who go to them, usually by speedboat, think themselves poor, in any sense of the word.
The trip includes wonderful views on the way of 'the Candelabra' a huge prehistoric carving on the mainland cliffs. The islands are a nature reserve and the number of sea lions basking and playing round the beaches is amazing.
Birds are also well represented here. The local penguins are of a breed that's very scarce in world terms. However the most beautiful sight is that of the boobies and the Inca terns.
In spite of their being a natural Paradise, the islands contain enough signs of human activity. All those birds mean a mass of shit, guava, and the ports for its exportation are prominent in the landscape. [edit text][editors]
