Lake Titicaca is where you seem to go far uphill to find the sea! Not only is it large enough; in part it includes a national boundary between Peru and Bolivia and it's the only haunt of the Bolivian navy.
It is included in numerous tours of Peru. These usually provide time in the Uros islands, man-made islands made of reeds - as are the houses and even the boats. It's said that a quarrel with a neighbour is easily resolved by cutting the reeds between the houses and creating a distance between.
Further west are two beautiful natural islands, Amantani and Taquile. Many tours arrange for members to stay in a family homestead on Amantani, an interesting and rather humbling experience. [edit text][editors]
