Located at the confluence of the Tambopata and Madre de Dios Rivers, Puerto Maldonado is half frontier town/half jungle gateway. A number of Ecological reserves and resorts lay two and three hours upstream, offering the chance to see cayman (small aligators), cabybara (known as the hippo of South America), macaw, howler monkeys and, if you are lucky, jaguars. Three National Parks, the Manu, Bahuaja-Sonene and Tambopata-Candamo control the surrounding rainforest. Puerto Maldonado itself was developed by the Rubber Barons who tapped the trees at the turn of the 20th century. Gold was found soon after and every spring gold miners still come to pan for nuggets brought down from the Andes as the winter snows melt. All this lends Puerto Madonado a frontier flavor that is vibrant and colorful! [edit text][editors]
