Auschwitz (or in Polish Oswiecim) is a town in southern Poland, which was used by the Nazi Germans as a place for the concentration camp. The town itself has not much to offer apart from the Nazi prisoners' camp. When the camp became too small, the Nazis built a new one, in the fields near Birkenau (pol. Brzezinka). This way, the camp is often referred to as Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Both camps are extremely sad and a legacy of the most horrific actions that humans had ever undertaken against themselves in the history of this planet. UNESCO listed the camp as German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp in 1979, on its third session (the second one listing world heritage sites), with a clear understanding that never ever a place like this anywhere will be listed again.
