For anybody staying in Lisbon more than a day, it has to be worth going out to Sintra on the quick, frequent and cheap train service - and this is no reflection on Lisbon! For such a small town it really is a marvel with three major sights before you even look at Doltra's travel tip.
These are the Palau Nacional, the Castelo dos Mouros and Pena Palace. They are all dramatically different and you can get a rover ticket for the local bus that does a round trip of them.
Only the first is anything like you might expect. The castelo is a ruin but well worth seeing. It spreads right along a ridge with colossal views. The Pena Palace is gloriously insane - mock everything! [edit text][editors]
