Santo da Serra is north-east of Funchal in Madeira, taking an hour on the bus if you pick the shorter route.
There are three particular things going for it. The least, and I must admit it fell a bit short of the description we'd been given is a Sunday market. Even so it's good for fruit and vegetables and Sunday bus services mean some places have to be ruled out for the day.
The other things are not in the least disappointing. The bus ride there is superb - no tunnels to hide great views, once you leave Funchal, and, unlike much of the island, not overly throng with cars or people, except the locally owned cars for the market. The valleys and vegetation are just as you might hope in a place that is a natural Paradise but is being turned in parts into a giant tourist trap.
Lastly the park, delightful rather than magnificent, is very restful and beyond the good childrens' play area is a marvellous mirador with views over the east end of the island. [edit text]  [editors]
