Amarante is a delightful city on and above the banks of the Tamega river in Portugal, a tributary of the Douro. It gets some visitors but, thankfully for those who do make it, not as many as it deserves. Thus it's still possible to sit near the banks of the river near the bridge with more yellow wagtails and dippers around than are usually found and watch women cleaning and drying carpets by the oldest of methods, scrubbing them while soaked in river water and then laying them out on an island to dry.
An excellent public transport circuit from Porto includes Amarante.
It goes
1 Train on main Douro Line to Livraçao [don't blink in case you miss it]
2 Train on branch line to Amarante
3 Bus to Vila Real
4 Train on branch line to Regua
5 Return on Douro line to Porto
Check times carefully - there are limited buses from Amarante to Vila Real and if you want to take your lunch in Amarante, you may need a taxi to the station - if so check the price first; it's a very short journey. [edit text][editors]
