Guimaraes was Portugal's first capital in the 12th century and there are buildings there associated with royalty and also with the 20th century dictator, Salazar, who lived in a mansion formerly owned by the Dukes of Bragança.
It's often combined with Braga for a visit from Porto. Unless you are into fairly heavy religion, you might well prefer to keep your time for Guimaraes, the rail journey from Porto being sufficiently rewarding for a two way trip. It involves travelling from the Trindade station in Porto and much is by narrow gauge rail.
The castle and the adjacent little Romanesque chapel of São Miguel make a fine setting at the top of the town and below, in the centre, are some very interesting looking museums. [edit text][editors]
