The interior of Minho Province doesn't attract nearly as many visitors as it deserves and in consequence it's mainly local people who will be your travel companions if you go by bus from Viana do Castelo. There are two routes and it's worth using one each way.
The Lima is a river so beautiful that it was thought by the Romans to be the River Lethe of legend - that would destroy the memory of home for any with the temerity to cross. It's said that a Roman general found it necessary to swim across alone and then call each of his soldiers by name, proving that he'd retained his memory, before they would cross. The bridge makes a wonderful tableau.
Again, there are two separate bus routes to Arcos de Valdevez one being by Ponte da Barca. Again it's a good idea to try to both, although if you can, it would be great to visit the Romanesque chapel at Bravaes. If you can't manage all that in a day, as there is some excellent walking, it would hardly be a hardship to make two journeys. [edit text][editors]
