Viana do Castelo is a resort on the Costa Verde of North Portugal. You don't like resorts? Fair enough but this is hardly a typical one. Get the Medieval and Art Nouveau walk leaflets from the very friendly and helpful tourist office and you can enjoy walks round the splendid little town.
Even if you don't want to be near the coast, don't stop reading yet; Viana still has something for you. it's the terminus for bus rides into the magical interior of Minho - more precisely to Ponte de Lima; two routes - try one each way - Ponte do Barca and Arcos de Valdevez, all to be highly commended.
