Cirque de Cilaos

The village of Cilaos is situated at 38Km North of Saint Louis in Reunion.
The road to the end of the circus has got 350 bends over a 30Km stretch. It took eight years to built it.
The city was first founded by slaves who escaped to this remote area, as it was inaccessible at the time. In the old time escaped slaves took refuge in this remote place.
In the center of the villages there are fantastic Creole houses, the local Church, La maison Du Peuplemnet des Hauts which retrace the history of slaves of the area and the Wine House. Cilaos is the only place in Reunion where wine is produce. The town is locally famous for its lentils. Also not to be missed is La Maison de la Broderie (embroidery house) which exposes traditional embroidery.
Cilaos is more famous for its cirque were lots of activities such as walking can be organised, many visitors go to Piton des Neiges at 3070m, it is the highest peak on the Indian Ocean. [edit text] [editors]
