Thailand trip Information

Posted: 2004-09-22 01:00 PM
Hi Stephen,

Welcome to GLOBOsapiens – I hope that you enjoy your time on here before your trip and get pleasure from publishing your photographs and tales after your RTW trip when you finally get back home.

I received your email and tried to contact you via the GLOBO chat room to give you some information on Thailand as you requested.

First the bad news: - South East Thailand will be in the rainy season throughout the October/November period when you intend to be there. So if you are heading south best go towards the south west coast and Phuket where it is drier.

Bangkok is no doubt where you will arrive and is by and large safe to walk around night and day. Young travellers usually head for the Khaosan Road area for cheap lodging and to meet fellow travellers. Look at www.sawadee.com for all accommodation in Thailand – it is a great website and has loads of tips. My recommendation though would be to stay either along Sukhumvit Rd or Ratchadapisek Rd which are both on the sky train/subway lines – it really does help you getting around this traffic congested city by using this method of transport on a tourist ticket. Alternatively, stay along the Chao Phraya River and use the public water taxis. Much of the general information in my report on Koh Samui on Globosapiens applies to Thailand generally.

The good news is to head North. In contrast to the Gulf areas the north of Thailand especially around Chiang Mai should be lovely and sunny. It is always warm in Thailand! T shirts and shorts are acceptable 24x7 – accept in Temples where you must show respect and cover up!

Lonely Planets Thailand Guide is a must. Look at http://www.bangkoktonight.com – it may frighten you off but has some good relevant information about food and first timers in Bangkok. Buy Farang magazine for up-to-date and pertinent travel news and information.

Have a great trip – Look forward to hearing your stories!
