Biysk is a small Siberian town in the Altay Kray, which is almost charming. The old wooden houses grouped in two clusters are crumbling fast and some of them are in such a desperate state that it beggars belief that someone is actually still living in them. The rest of the town is really sad and concrete, full of the gray blocks of flats. Interestingly the town still boasts a large Lenin statue. The river Biya is stunningly clean and many people swim in the river. There is a beach with two poor cafes, which sell terrible instant coffee, cold bottled beer and terrible sandwiches. Nevertheless the beach, in the summer, is the centre of socialising for the locals. There is one hotel in town, Hotel Central, although there are rumours of two other, private, hotels, which are slightly more expensive. Biysk is not well connected with the rest of the country. There is a small bus terminal, but it the taxis which do the trick. [edit text][editors]
