Ile de Goree is a magnificent andlovely place where horrific and tragic things happened. For it was a centre if slave shipments. The island has lovely palaces, mansions, and colourful little alleys lined with pastel colonial buildings, of course a mighty fortress.
The harbour is complete with small open air restaurants and cafes. Their position against large colonial mansions and the fort itself make a very pleasant setting.
The museum of slavery is a significant sight of all Senegal. It can be quite depressing butmost guides inside are cheerful, friendly and professional, and still maintaining a respectful atmosphere of the place.
Boat tours to the island are organised by everyone and are easily done independently, as there are frequent sailings from the mainland. Depending on the waves, the transfer takes aproximately an hour and is cheap. [edit text][editors]
