Amsterdam - Netherlands, Noord-Holland The large irregular rectangular square is the historic center of Amsterdam, believed to be site of the original dam across the Amstel River. Until the 19th C, ships could sail right up to the square to offload. Today the important thoroughfare Damrak follows the course of the river.
On the far side, the Royal Palace and to the right the New Church. Other sides have the Krasnopolski Hotel and sady Madame Tussaud.
