These massive volcanic ash deposits at Pasabag no doubt resemble what all the Cappadocian castles looked like before the exterior walls were eroded and washed away as in Uchisar, Zelve, and Cavusin. Note that each has one or two carved holes high in the side for access. Pasabag was largely inhabited by monks and religious types in the centuries around the first millenium.
