Istanbul - Turkey, Istanbul This incomplete structure is one of the oldest surviving artifacts of ancient Greece dating to 479BC commemorating honoring Apollo for his aid in the battle of Plataea against Xerxes and his invading Persian army. Originally 18 feet high comprised of three intertwiined snakes, the golden bowl, the golden tripod, and the snake heads have all been lost - Ottomans equated snakes with the devil.
The column was excavated in the 19th C. Note how far below ground level the column extends - down to the level of the orginal Hippodrome.
