Dresden - Germany, Sachsen Dresden's most famous statue is an equestrian depiction of August the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland in glistening gold plate over a statue of copper on an iron frame. Saxony's most famous ruler received his name for being able to break horseshoes and metal goblets in his bare hands and perhaps for allegedly fathering 356 little Augusts. His death in a battle in Poland in 1733 is indicated by the front legs of the horse elevated off the ground. To escape WWII bombing, it was hidden in a cave and replaced at the center of Neustadt and base of the August Bridge in 1956.
August is best remembered for his support of art and architecture. Most of the great buildings of Dresden were built during his reign. He is less fondly remembered for his political maneuverings in Poland and Lithuania.
