Travel guide to Levoca
Tatra Mountains
Tatra Mountains
Levoca is a small city in northern Slovakia, located in Spis Region. City is full of fine predominantly Reneissance buildings. City has been subscribed to UNESCO World Heritage list on 28.06.2009. Old part of the town is surrounded by massive defensive walls with few gates (Polish, Kosice) survived. Most interesting is the square which is very well preserved (despite one or two modern incursions) and contains a number of striking buildings which were the townhouses of the local nobility in the late Middle Ages. The most famous building in the square is St. James church with the highest wooden altar in Europe, carved by Master Paul of Levoca. Another landmark is Old Town Hall which now contains a museum. Just nearby the Town Hall is the wrought iron "Cage of Shame", dating back to the 17th century, used for public punishment of miscreants. Close to the city is great Spis Castle.
