Travel guide to Chapman's Peak
Scenic drive
Scenic drive
About a half an hour drive outside of Cape Town you can take the Chapman's Peak Scenic Drive. It is said to be one of the most spectacular coastal road in South Africa; it was built between 1915 and opened 1922 by the then Govenor General of South Africa. It starts in the picturesque fishing harbour of Hout Bay and then winds up to Chapman's Point, from hear the views are outstanding, of the rocks below, the baboons in the middle of the road, the whales off shore; it is completely breathtaking. The scenic drive continues until Noordhoek when the road dips back down into the bay.

After heavy rainfall, particularly in winter, the road tends to close as the risk of falling rocks becomes ever present. It is now a toll road so that each vehicle can contribute to the upkeep (cost of RND23). [edit text]  [editors]
